# Install the DMA Card

Ten minutes, a screwdriver, and one free PCIe slot. Your card ships **pre-flashed** — you do not flash anything.

## Before you start

* Main PC is off and unplugged
* You know where the free PCIe slots are (look for the long slots at the bottom of the motherboard)

## Steps

1. **Unplug the PC and press the power button** for 5 seconds to drain leftover power.
2. **Open the side panel.**
3. **Find a free PCIe slot.** Any size works — x1, x4 or x16. The slot is open at the back of the case, which is where the card's port will stick out.
4. **Remove the slot cover** at the back of the case for that slot.
5. **Push the card in firmly.** It clicks in with the same gentle, even pressure as a graphics card. The metal bracket faces the back of the case.
6. **Screw the bracket** in with the case thumbscrew.
7. **Close the panel and plug the PC back in.**

## Common questions

**Does the card need extra power?** No. The card runs on slot power only.

**Which slot is best?** Any free one. If you have both a x1 and x16 free, the one furthest from the graphics card usually has the most room to work in.

**My slot is small but the card is long.** PCIe slots are backwards compatible — a long card fits a short slot as long as the slot is open-ended or the overhang is empty space. If you are unsure, send a photo of your motherboard in your ticket and we will point at the slot.

## Querying This Documentation
If you need additional information that is not directly available in this page, you can query the documentation by asking a question.

Perform an HTTP GET request on the following URL with the `ask` and `goal` query parameters:

```
GET https://guides.privatesolution.org/dma-card-setup/install-the-dma-card.md?ask=<question>&goal=<user_goal>
```

`ask` is the immediate question: it should be specific, self-contained, and written in natural language.
`goal` is what the user is ultimately trying to achieve, the reason they need the answer. Sharing it helps GitBook give you a better, more relevant answer. A goal is most helpful when it describes the outcome the user wants rather than restating the question. For example, with `ask=how do I create an API token`, a goal like `automate deployments from our CI pipeline` lets GitBook tailor the answer to that use case.

The response will contain a direct answer to the question and relevant excerpts and sources from the documentation.

Use this mechanism when the answer is not explicitly present in the current page, you need clarification or additional context, or you want to retrieve related documentation sections.
